Pieces of Portland: An Inside Look at America's Weirdest City was written by Marie Deatherage and photographed by Joyce Brekke. It's a 258 page 8.5 x 11 softcover book with 400 full color photos.
Marie has lived in Portland since 1974. She taught Environment of Portland classes at Portland State University for a number of years, along with other Geography classes at PSU, Lewis and Clark College, Willamette University and University of Oregon. She has degrees in Geography from University of Chicago and University of Oregon. Marie was director of communication and learning at Meyer Memorial Trust for 20 years, until she retired in 2014. She's an avid quilter, gardener, reader, writer and observer of all things Portland.
Joyce graduated from University of Chicago (where she and Marie met) and earned her law degree from UCLA. She spent her entire legal career at Legal Services, directing offices in Longview, Spokane and Vancouver WA. Joyce has traveled around the world, to every continent except Antarctica and Australia. She spent several extended periods in Beijing, teaching English to university students. It was while traveling that she took up photography. Joyce is an avid quilter, gardener and reader.
